As the Reserved Seat Bill campaign intensifies in Imo and Anambra States, Mr. Godson Okeoma, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imo State Civil Service Commission, has expressed his endorsement of the Bill, announcing his readiness to collaborate with the Social And Integral Development Centre (SIDEC) to drive the IMPACT PROJECT forward.

He expressed his endorsement during an advocacy visit undertaken by the Social And Integral Development Centre (SIDEC) to the Imo State Secretariat on 17 March 2026.

Mrs. Ugochi Agalaba-Ehiahuruike, Executive Director of SIDEC, revealed that the organization in partnership with Nigeria Civic Society Situation Room is undertaking an IMPACT PROJECT which involves inclusive mobilization drive, engaging diverse stakeholders across religious, traditional, legislative, and political spheres to garner support for the reserved seat bill, aimed at promoting women's representation in Nigeria's governance framework.

She articulated that the organisation seeks to realise governance through an inclusive paradigm, wherein governmental offices, institutions, infrastructure, and public spaces are deliberately designed to foster a policy framework that champions inclusivity for women, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable populations.

 She emphasized that the Reserved Seat Bill advocacy seeks to rectify the glaring disparity in women's representation within Nigeria's legislative framework. Currently, women occupy merely 4 out of 108 senatorial seats, 16 out of 360 federal representative seats, and 55 out of approximately 991 state legislative positions. 

Mrs. Agalaba-Ehiahuruike decried this imbalance, highlighting the resultant marginalisation of women, quoting that "poverty has a woman face". The Special Seat Bill, she noted, would facilitate the prioritisation of gender-responsive policies and reforms, ultimately benefiting women.

She argued that women's inclusion is essential for accelerated development and urged the Permanent Secretary to leverage his influence to persuade lawmakers to support the bill when it reaches the national assembly. 

She respectfully sought the Permanent Secretary's collaborative support, leveraging his influential position in overseeing women's affairs in Imo, to champion the bill's advancement. She encouraged him to utilize his esteemed office to advocate persuasively with lawmakers, urging their endorsement of the bill upon its presentation to the national assembly.

In response, Mr. Godson Okeoma lauded SIDEC's pioneering efforts, affirming that the implementation of their projects, particularly those benefiting the disabled community, would be truly commendable. He pledged to forge a collaborative partnership with SIDEC, converging their collective energies towards achieving a shared vision.

 He noted, however, that Imo State is fortunate to have a governor who champions gender-sensitive and inclusive governance, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to empowering vulnerable groups. This forward-thinking leadership he said, has fostered a sense of belonging among women, evident in their appointment to strategic government positions in the state.

"Child abuse and domestic violence is reducing drastically in Imo courtesy of the first lady's approach.

"In Imo there are functional laws protecting the rights of women and children. This ministry and SIDEC need to carry out a sensitization tour for people to understand child law, widowhood law, and laws protecting women against abuse, that way they can defend their rights".

He directed the team to formulate a comprehensive blueprint and actionable work plan to operationalise their initiatives benefiting women, children, and the disabled community, emphasising that his ministry prioritises meticulous organisation and attention to detail in its collaborative endeavours.

HRH Eze Uche Austin Possible, Traditional Ruler of Umuonyeche Autonomous Community and Chairman, Owerri Municipal Council of Traditional Rulers, has reiterated his unwavering dedication to promoting the interests of credible women in politics and other fields, characterizing the Special Seat Bill as both timely and indispensable. 

He expressed gratitude to SIDEC for soliciting his input as a key stakeholder on the reserved seat bill, during an advocacy visit to his palace on March 17, 2026, where he pledged his steadfast support for their PROJECT IMPACT initiative, which focuses on mobilization, participation, advocacy, and transformative interventions in the lives of women, children, and vulnerable groups.

Mrs. Ugochi Agalaba-Ehiahuruike, Executive Director of SIDEC, averred that the reintroduction of the reserved seat bill was aimed at fostering inclusivity in governance, which would, in turn, catalyze enhanced development and precipitate a more enlightened society.

She stated that the bill aims to establish a framework for equitable representation, entailing reserved seats for women in the Senate (one per state), the House of Representatives, and approximately three reserved seats in each House of Assembly. Notably, this provision would not preclude women from contesting other positions alongside men at all levels of governance.

Whilst acknowledging the presence of women in appointive positions, she emphasized the imperative of achieving commensurate parity in elective offices, deeming it untenable that the House of Representatives comprises only 16 female federal lawmakers out of 360 members, the Senate has a mere 4 female senators out of 108, and a paltry 55 female state lawmakers out of approximately 991 House of Assembly members nationwide.

Ehiahuruike humbly implored the monarch to mobilize stakeholders, particularly legislators, to lend their support to the bill upon its presentation to the National Assembly, underscoring the necessity of securing a two-thirds majority vote to ensure its enactment.

Eze Possible responded, affirming that the era of undervaluing women is over, acknowledging that women have consistently demonstrated their leadership prowess and effectively discharged their responsibilities. "When entrusted with an opportunity, a woman can yield exponential benefits," he remarked. 

The monarch disclosed that, exemplifying his commitment, he has appointed two women to his cabinet and intends to appoint more women to enhance representation, fostering inclusivity and creating an enabling environment to cultivate a sense of belonging among women in community endeavors.

As a proponent of women's empowerment and a dedicated gender activist, he recounted his instrumental role in facilitating the enactment of the VAPP law, which has afforded women significant protections, safeguarding their rights to personal dignity, property inheritance, and ownership, among others. He pledged to steadfastly advocate for the reserved seat bill until its realization.

Eze Possible urged women to demonstrate their capabilities and establish their credibility, affirming his steadfast support for women who embody strength, integrity, passion, and a zeal for effecting positive change. "Women constitute a numerical majority; their exclusion from positions of authority breeds disenfranchisement. Leveraging their demographic strength, they ought to assert themselves and provide mutual support. Their efforts should be directed towards self-actualization, rather than competing with their spouses."

The Representative Member for Ehime Mbano State Constituency, Imo State, and Chairman of the House Committee on Women and Humanitarian Affairs, Hon. Bernard Ndubuisi Ozoemena, has pledged his support for the reserved seats bill in Imo, undertaking to make a constructive contribution towards its enactment.

He made this declaration at the Imo State House of Assembly Complex on 17th March 2026, during an advocacy visit by the Social And Integral Development Centre (SIDEC), in partnership with the Nigeria Civic Society Situation Room, who had called at his office to solicit his support and engagement in furtherance of the Special Seat Bill For Women.

The organisation is presently implementing the IMPACT PROJECT, a multifaceted intervention encompassing advocacy, mobilisation, participation, and transformative initiatives targeting women, children, and disabled communities. Currently, it is undertaking stakeholder engagements in Anambra and Imo States, advocating for the Reserved Seats Bill for Women, sponsored by Hon. Benjamin Kanu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. The bill has successfully navigated the first and second readings at the National Assembly. The organisation is now seeking to secure two-thirds majority support for the bill when it comes up for final passage in the House.

In her address, SIDEC Executive Director, Mrs. Ugochi Agalaba-Ehiahuruike, underscored the imperative of augmenting women's representation in elective offices as a catalyst for the nation's holistic development. She lamented the glaring absence of female lawmakers in the current Imo Assembly, positing that the inclusion of women would inject balance and inclusivity into the legislative process.

She decried the disheartening statistics, citing that Nigeria has only four female senators out of 104 senators in the country, 16 female lawmakers out of 360 Members in the House of Representatives, and approximately 55 female House of Assembly members out of 991 across the 36 states. She bemoaned this glaring disparity, characterizing it as emblematic of imbalance and marginalization of women. The enactment of the reserved seat bill for women, she noted, would rectify this anomaly, fostering a more equitable participation and enabling women to make meaningful contributions to governance.

This is not a novel initiative, she observed, noting that the bill has been previously introduced; however, it is currently gaining significant attention, spurred by the successes recorded in Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and other African nations where women's participation in elected offices has catalyzed sustainable development, enhanced the citizenry's quality of life, and demonstrated the efficacy of effective representation.

Hon. Ozoemena commended SIDEC for their laudable advocacy efforts, acknowledging that society necessitates inclusive governance to attain optimal outcomes and progress. He pledged to champion the domestication of the bill, contributing his efforts towards its realization, stating that stakeholder engagement would be forthcoming, as it is a noble cause that would resonate with and garner support from all patriotic Nigerians. "We will adapt the bill to our local context and replicate it here, tailoring it according to our peculiarities," he affirmed.

His Royal Highness Eze John Nwosu, the revered traditional ruler of Isiokwu Ihioma autonomous community, along with his esteemed council of chiefs and village heads, urgently appeal for intervention regarding the critically escalating erosion crisis at Umuezekeoha Umudurunguma, Isiokwu Ihioma in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State. 

This dire situation has resulted in loss of lives, devastation of farmlands, familial displacement, and forced relocation of indigenous residents to adjacent communities, necessitating immediate attention and remedial action.

During a press tour of the ravaged erosion site on February 20th, 2026, Eze Nwosu poignantly highlighted the dire circumstances facing his subjects, who are now unable to access their homes, cultivate their lands, or maintain a semblance of dignified existence. His Highness underscored the existential threat posed to the inhabitants, particularly during the impending rainy season, painfully remarking that "the rain that that brings about growth, brings us destruction at all times".

HRH Eze Nwosu, a seasoned administrator and former Chairman of Orlu Local Government, as well as erstwhile Federal Resident Commissioner for multiple states, lamented that despite repeated appeals to successive local government administrations, the erosion crisis was allowed to escalate unchecked. He noted that the ravages of erosion have now reached catastrophic proportions, rendering the local and state governments almost incapable of effective intervention. In light of this, the Federal Government is implored to intervene expeditiously to mitigate the humanitarian crisis and prevent further devastation.

According to him, "we have brought the local Government Chairman to the site. He came with a retinue of officials, including information officials and he promised to speak to agencies of Government and even the governor. After one year, we heard nothing. Not even a skirmish of rescue activities to soothe our nerves and give the impression of action in progress."

Eze Nwosu appealed to the Orlu Local Government Authority to facilitate the provision of a temporary footpath, citing the constitutional mandate of local governments, as stipulated in the 1999 constitution. He acknowledged that while the scale of devastation exceeds the local government's capacity, he emphasized that neglecting to provide such assistance would be unconscionable. The creation of a footpath, he stressed, is imperative to safeguard residents from the hazards of venomous reptiles and wild animals that now inhabit the erosion gullies, posing a constant threat to life.

Hon. Walter Oleghara, President General of the community, issued an urgent appeal to the Governor of Imo State, imploring His Excellency to intervene decisively on behalf of the beleaguered community. He underscored the existential threat posed to residents, highlighting the erosion's pernicious impact on the local economy and aquatic ecosystem, as fertile farmlands are ravaged and environmental degradation are causing health hazards for the indigenous population.

Mr. Augustine Chinedu Nwosu, a resident of the affected area, issued a desperate plea for intervention from both Federal and State authorities, describing the perilous situation as having rendered access to their homes virtually impossible. He expressed distress at the psychological toll on his children, who are now reluctant to return home due to the looming danger. Recounting the erosion's insidious progression since its inception in 2011, Mr. Nwosu lamented the tragic loss of life, affecting both native and non-native inhabitants of the community, as the unabated erosion continues to ravage the area.

Mrs. Nneoma Osuigwe, another resident, implored the government to deploy expert personnel to assess the situation, highlighting the severe disruption to daily life. She highlighted the negative impact on women's livelihoods, as inaccessible routes now hinder their ability to tend to farms or engage in market activities. With fear, she questioned the impending danger for the upcoming rainy season, stating the possible exacerbation of their already precarious circumstances.

The Palace Secretary, Mr. Kennedy Udeze, disclosed that philanthropic individuals and community leaders have undertaken commendable efforts to mitigate the crisis, investing substantial resources in attempts to stabilize the erosion site and establish a safe passage. Regrettably, these initiatives have been rendered futile, as the relentless erosion has nullified their endeavors and resulted in the loss of invested funds, further exacerbating the community's plight.

He emphasized that experts should be invited to carefully look into the crisis and bring about the best solution immediately.

Bishop Geoffrey Okoroafor of Egbu Diocese, Anglican Communion, has formally expressed his ardor to collaborate with the Social and Integral Development Centre (SIDEC) in championing the Reserved Seats Bill, thereby propelling the advocacy for women's legislative representation in Imo State and beyond.

The Bishop made this commitment during a visit by a SIDEC delegation to the Anglican Diocese of Egbu in Owerri, Imo State, on Friday, 13th March, 2026, as part of efforts to garner support for the bill under the organization's Project Impact initiative in Anambra and Imo States.

The Executive Director of SIDEC, Mrs. Ugochi Agalaba-Ehiahuruike, announced that the organization, in partnership with the Nigeria Civic Society Situation Room, is spearheading an initiative aimed at redressing the imbalance in women's representation across Nigeria's governance structures.

She decried the prevailing underrepresentation and marginalization of women, highlighting the absence of an enabling environment. The proposed bill, she noted, seeks to establish 37 reserved seats for women in the Senate, an equivalent allocation in the House of Representatives, and 3 seats in each House of Assembly. She solicited the clergy's support and collaboration in mobilizing stakeholders to endorse and vote in favour of the bill when presented to the National Assembly, emphasizing that securing the requisite two-thirds majority vote hinges on concerted efforts.

She conveyed optimism that the bill's passage is attainable, citing the success of similar initiatives in Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya, where women have demonstrated exceptional governance capabilities. "If the Reserved Seats Bill has yielded positive results in these countries, there's no reason why it cannot be replicated in Nigeria," she remarked.

Responding, Bishop Okoroafor expressed gratitude to SIDEC for their commendable efforts thus far and affirmed his readiness to collaborate with the organization in advancing their shared objectives.

"I am very much willing to collaborate with you. Nigerian women have achieved remarkable success globally, often surpassing expectations. I fully endorse your endeavour, acknowledging that women are equally capable of leadership.

"I also blame the women for undermining one another. Despite being the numerical majority, women have failed to utilize their voting power because of bags of rice shared during elections, often prioritizing short-term gains over long-term benefits. It appears some of us have lost our sense of reasoning."

He observed, however, that Nigerian male politicians are often driven by self-interest, which may hinder their willingness to allocate reserved seats to women. He drew parallels with past instances, noting the initial enthusiasm when a woman was first appointed as a Vice-Chancellor in Nigeria, which was met with widespread acclaim. He expressed optimism that Nigeria's trajectory could shift positively, envisioning a future where a female president could catalyze lasting change in Nigeria.

He pledged to undertake strategic steps to contribute to the advancement of women's representation in governance, thereby ensuring they are accorded reserved seats and a position of prominence in decision-making processes.

Prominent Muslim Cleric, Barr. Suleiman Njoku, Imam of Imo State, has affirmed his unwavering commitment to supporting the Special Seat Bill for women in the state. 

He made this known during an advocacy visit by a delegation from SIDEC to the Imo Central Mosque on Friday, 13th March, 2026. The visit aimed to discuss the Reserved Seats bill for women, as part of PROJECT IMPACT - Inclusive mobilization for participation, advocacy and civic transformation, a collaborative initiative between SIDEC and the Nigeria Civic Society Situation Room, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The organization is undertaking an inclusive mobilization drive in Anambra and Imo States, engaging diverse stakeholders across religious, traditional, legislative, and political spheres to garner support for the reserved seat bill, aimed at addressing the existing imbalance in women's representation in Nigeria's legislative bodies, particularly at the national and state assembly levels, as well as promoting women's active participation in Nigeria's governance framework.

 In her speech, the Executive Director of SIDEC, Mrs. Ugochi Agalaba-Ehiahuruike decried the glaring gender disparity within Nigeria's corridors of power, citing the stark statistics of only 4 female senators, 16 female federal representatives, and approximately 55 female lawmakers across the 36 state houses of assembly. 

To address this imbalance, she advocated for the allocation of 37 reserved seats for women in the Senate (one per state plus the FCT), 37 seats for women in the House of Representatives, and 3 seats for women in each House of Assembly. This proposal, she emphasized, does not preclude women from contesting other elective positions alongside men. She underscored the viability of this approach, citing the success of similar initiatives in countries such as Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania, where women have demonstrated exceptional governance capabilities.

 Ehiahuruike criticized the disparity, citing the anomaly of a male chairperson leading the Gender Committee at the Imo House of Assembly, emphasizing the pervasive marginalization of women, and argued that women's inclusion is essential for accelerated development at all levels.

She urged the Imam to leverage his esteemed position to advocate with lawmakers, urging them to endorse the bill upon its presentation at the national assembly.

The Imam applauded SIDEC for it's efforts and affirmed his unequivocal support for the Special Seat Bill, underscoring the Islamic principle of gender parity, which accords women equal rights and opportunities as men, particularly in the realm of governance. He supported enhanced representation of women, citing the profound impact of maternal empowerment on national development, as women play pivotal roles in shaping their children, families, communities, and the nation at large.

He pledged to vocally champion the bill and augment his efforts with fervent supplication, predicated on his conviction that prayer possesses the efficacy to sensitize and incline the hearts of incumbent male politicians towards endorsing this progressive legislation.

The esteemed Honourable Commissioner representing Imo State at the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Abuja, Hon. Jerry Alagbaoso Asiwaju, has pledged a comprehensive transformation of the FCC office in Imo State. This assurance was conveyed to the personnel of the Imo State FCC office, signaling a new era of revitalization and reform.

He articulated this commitment on March 5th at the Commission's premises at Port Harcourt Road, Owerri, during his inaugural official visit, marking a significant milestone as the newly appointed Honourable Commissioner representing Imo State.

Responding to the challenges presented by Mr. Okolorie Valentine, Director of the Imo State office, Alagbaoso reaffirmed the Fifth Commission's unwavering dedication to collaborative efforts. He highlighted the exceptional leadership qualities of Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, Executive Chairman of the Commission, describing her as a seasoned, empathetic, and receptive leader committed to driving transformative progress and achieving outstanding results for the Commission.

The Imo State office faces several pressing challenges, as outlined by Director Okolorie Valentine, including intermittent electricity supply, inadequate office equipment, insufficient operational funding, deteriorated infrastructure, staff marginalization, and stagnant career growth. 

The Director appealed to Hon. Alagbaoso to facilitate infrastructural revitalization and provision of essential resources, augment funding for statewide monitoring initiatives, champion equitable career advancement opportunities for state office personnel, and foster seamless coordination between the headquarters and state offices.

The Director on behalf of the Imo commission, conveyed his confidence in Alagbaoso's ability to usher in a new era of transformative change, reinvigorated optimism, unwavering integrity, and enhanced stature for the Imo State commission, ultimately yielding a more profound and lasting impact on the state. The personnel presented a gift of appreciation to Alagbaoso.

Upon acknowledging the concerns raised, Alagbaoso provided assurances that the prevailing challenges would be relegated to the past. He underscored the imperative of a conducive work environment, citing the indispensability of reliable power supply, functional equipment, and adequate amenities. Alagbaoso highlighted the sweeping reforms instituted by Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, emphasizing the Commission's commitment to ensuring equitable distribution of resources, infrastructure, and opportunities across states, local government areas, ministries, and institutions.

Alagbaoso stated that the newly appointed Executive Chairman, having earned her credentials, is poised to initiate transformative interventions in state offices. He assured that he would escalate the concerns to both the Chairman and Governor Uzodimma, ensuring a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges.

Alagbaoso enjoined the Imo State commission personnel to adopt a proactive stance in enhancing their office environment, emphasizing that complaints must be accompanied by involvement. He underscored the collective responsibility inherent in the FCC's narrative, advising that, with requisite approvals, they should undertake remedial initiatives. "Autonomy in action is key," he stressed, "you must not rely solely on government support for every endeavour."

The grassroots politician made this resolute declaration on January 9th in his hometown Akokwa, Ideato North, while addressing a gathering of devoted supporters and esteemed stakeholders from the Constituency.

The event, preceded by a complimentary medical seminar, health screenings, and pharmaceutical donations generously sponsored by Ike-Imo, drew considerable attendance from the Ideato North constituency.

Addressing the mammoth crowd, Ike-Imo reaffirmed his dedication to enhancing the welfare and livelihoods of his constituents through initiatives centered on empowerment, civic engagement, and legislative advocacy. He pledged to champion bills and implement projects that catalyze transformative progress within the communities.

The Graduate of Environmental Sciences and CEO of Onono Master Oil and Gas described himself as a public servant driven by a desire to deliver democratic dividends to his constituents, rather than personal aggrandizement. Inspires Youths To Take Action

The Mbano Big Family, a community-based youth development organization in Imo State, celebrated its 5th anniversary with the Mbano Youth 5.0 Summit, a vibrant gathering of young leaders, educators, and development advocates held in Owerri, Imo State.

This year’s summit, themed “The 21st Century Mbano Youth – A Reflective Action Plan,” reflected on the organization’s five years of impact and its ongoing mission to educate, enlighten, and empower young people across Mbano.

The convener of the initiative, Mr. Magnus Agbake, described the event as a platform for young people to discuss practical ways to build a better future for themselves without waiting for government support.

“This is a call for young people to help themselves and others, no matter how small their beginnings,” Agbake said. “You don’t need to wait for sponsors or elders. Start with what you have people will support you when they see your consistency. Not everyone started big; some began from scratch and grew into great success stories.”

According to him, the Mbano Youth Summit serves as a mentorship and empowerment forum that encourages self-employment, business innovation, and skill development among youth.

Representing the Vice Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Associate Professor Ndidi Amaka Uwazuruike, Acting Director of Career Services and Counselling, commended the initiative as “super inspiring” and praised the determination of Mbano youths to build themselves and their communities.

Uwazuruike also disclosed that the world has moved from certificates to skills, noting that today's economy values creativity from catering and fashion design to technology and remote work. Young people must develop practical skills that help them thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.

Delivering a lecture on Gender Equity in Education, Employment, and Leadership, Harriet Ijeomah, Managing Director of Harsco Global, called on the youth to champion women’s inclusion and development in leadership and governance.

She emphasized the importance of supporting the Reserved Seat Bill for Women, which seeks to increase women’s representation in political offices and decision-making spaces.

Gender equity is not a women’s fight alone,” Ijeomah noted. “It’s a collective responsibility that drives fairness, innovation, and inclusive growth. When women rise, communities thrive. Youths must support this cause by advocating, mentoring, and promoting equal opportunities for women.

Participants at the event expressed deep appreciation for the summit’s impact. Hope Bunka, one of the attendees, described it as “a life-changing platform” that motivated her to act.

We can’t keep waiting for the government,” she said. “Every youth has what it takes to start small, grow, and make a difference. This summit reminded us that we are the platform we need.”

The event concluded with a renewed call for collective responsibility and youth-driven solutions to unemployment, insecurity, and underdevelopment across Mbano communities and beyond.

The councillor representing Owerre Nkwoji Ward 7 in Nkwerre Local Government Legislative Council, Honourable Mac-Aneleh Tochukwu O, has presented a one-year scorecard of his achievements in office. 

Speaking with our correspondent in Nkwerre, he highlighted his legislative efforts which have culminated into laudable achievements since assumption of office. 

His legislative achievements included, *co-sponsored the bill for the Installation of CCTV cameras in the Nkwerre Local Government Council headquarters for effective Security of lives and government properties.

* Co-sponsored a byelaw for Solar street lights in the Council area and various wards to illuminate our environment 

* Moved a Motion for erecting Speed Bumps to curb accidents on the Owerre Nkwoji- Abba road. 

* Moved a Motion to curb the erosion menace around the LGA (creation of a good drainage system to curb flooding.

* Moved a Motion to improve a sustainable environment for learning and securing the lives of students in Umoke Primary School and Owerre Nkwoji Secondary School. 

* Moved a Motion for sponsorship enrollment of constituents into the Health Insurance Scheme.

 Prof. Innocent Akujobi Eleazu, the National President of Nigeria Association of Economics (NAE) and renowned Emeritus Professor of Economics on 8th August, 2025 bade a final farewell to his cherished wife, late Ezinne Fidelia Ngozichukwu Eleazu in a posh funeral ceremony that reflected her remarkable life and enduring legacy. 

The solemn requiem mass, held at Christ The King Catholic Church Ogbeke Obibiezena in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, drew an impressive array of dignitaries from diverse backgrounds, all united in paying tribute to the deceased matriarch.

In his eulogy, Prof. Eleazu lavished praise on his late wife, describing her as an extraordinary individual, a paragon of moral integrity, and a beacon of character and decency. He extolled her exceptional qualities, highlighting her profound impact on his life, their family, and the countless lives she touched. His words, "She embodied the essence of motherhood, a disciplinarian, and a pillar of strength, while being unassuming, industrious, generous, compassionate, honest, dependable, and faithful to our union. Her unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church and her deep devotion to her faith were truly inspiring," served as a testament to her remarkable character.

The funeral ceremony was a poignant reflection of the strong family bonds and the outpouring of support from friends and associates who gathered to pay their respects. It was a fitting tribute to Late Ezinne Fidelia's life, marked by moments of mourning, remembrance, and celebration of her numerous achievements.

The late Fidelia Eleazu was a trailblazer in education, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless students within the Owerri metropolis. Her illustrious career as a teacher and school headmistress spanned several decades, during which she played a transformative role in shaping the minds of future generations. Her tenure as a school headmistress was distinguished by exceptional leadership, visionary administration, and an unwavering commitment to educational excellence.

Beyond her achievements in education, Late Fidelia Eleazu was a pioneering entrepreneur and community development czar, whose progressive initiatives created employment opportunities that lifted many out of poverty and empowered them with financial independence. Her legacy serves as a testament to the profound impact one individual can have on their community.

Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the  Representative of Ideato Federal Constituency, has urged the Local Government Area (LGA) Officials of Ideato North and South to judiciously utilize federal allocations to provide paramount security measures and essential amenities to the citizenry. This charge was delivered on August 19th, when the lawmaker disbursed a substantial sum of 61 million naira to the bereaved families of the recent tragic attack in Arondizuogu/Umualaoma and Osina communities of Ideato North LGA, Imo State.

Through an emergency fund sourced from benevolent friends and associates, Ugochinyere provided succor to the families of the 26 victims, allocating specific funds for education, entrepreneurship, and other vital needs. Notably, Obinna Onyebuchi's family received N2 million to support his widow's business and care for their young children. Similarly, Hyacinth Nwosu's son was provided with funds to complete his secondary education, while his aunt received N1 million to augment her small-scale business and support the boy.

Furthermore, the lawmaker donated N3 million to each affected community to facilitate their recovery from the devastating attack. To bolster security measures, Ugochinyere allocated 2 million naira to vigilante groups and provided funds to the police and parishes to support their efforts in the affected communities.

Emphasizing the need for enhanced security, Ugochinyere stressed that local security and policing are the primary responsibility of state and local government areas. He urged the LGA to judiciously utilize its funds to protect citizens and equip communities with necessary resources, asserting that "our communities must be safeguarded."

Highlighting his commitment to exceeding legislative responsibilities, Ugochinyere cited notable achievements, including provision of basic amenities such as water supply, renovation of schools, and installation of solar-powered street lights. He expressed gratitude to his friends and associates who contributed to the emergency fund, describing them as selfless and charitable individuals concerned with the welfare of citizens.

The beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude to the lawmaker for his intervention, with Miss Perpetual Mbaoma, a Federal Polytechnic Nekede undergraduate, appreciating the support that has enabled her to continue her education despite the loss of her sponsor.

 Renowned Public Affairs Analyst Lawrence Opara from Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State has faulted the recent statement by the State Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, that Imo State's maternal mortality ratio is 163 deaths per 100,000 live births, citing Kingmakers.com.ng as his source.

In a release, Opara questioned the authenticity of Emelumba's source, maintaining that the website lacks credible references, transparency, and verifiable methodology. He stated that the website's claims about maternal mortality rates in various states, including Imo, appear to be fabricated.

Opara revealed that according to a Dataphyte 2023 report, the actual maternal mortality rate in Imo State is approximately 1837 deaths per 100,000 live births, which is almost double the Nigerian average of 993 deaths per 100,000. 

He noted with disappointment the visible contrast between the government's claims and the actual numbers, doubting  the government's commitment to providing accurate data and addressing the healthcare crisis in the state.

His words, "This shameless reliance on hoax numbers is more than just incompetence. It is chronic negligence and mindless wickedness dressed up as governance. It tells every Imolite that the people in charge are not only incapable of doing something as basic as collecting real data, but also more willing to put out fake statistics than introspect and try to bridge this data gap. If the state’s health statistics are sourced from fantasy websites, then I don't even want to think about how bad it is in other sectors.

"The lives of mothers and babies in Imo State are not a PR prop for the governor's ignorant lapdogs to play stupid politics with. It is an issue too sacrosanct to be twisted for political convenience. Every single death is a human tragedy, because this is someone’s daughter, sister, or wife gone because the system failed them. Until we have a government that confronts reality instead of hiding behind hoax websites, the tragedies will continue.

"So yes, Dr. Amadi’s numbers are on-point, and they force us to face the ugly truth that we have to sit up and save the lives of women and children in our state. 

"And to those in charge: please stop treating us like fools. This is the digital age. You can't just cook up tales of rainbows and sunshine and expect us to swallow them happily, while the reality burns the skin from our bones. You are barely 2 years into your second tenure but you are more focused on politicking for the next election than on delivering any actual governance. It is our brothers and sisters that suffer and die while you fiddle. Get back to work!"

Opara argued that the government's reliance on fabricated statistics is not only incompetent but also negligent and wicked. By using fake numbers, the government is avoiding the reality of the healthcare crisis in Imo State and failing to address the root causes of maternal mortality, he asserted.

He demanded the government takes immediate action to address the healthcare crisis and provide accurate data on maternal mortality rates, adding that until the government confronts reality and takes concrete steps to improve healthcare, the tragedies will continue.

In a bid to foster credible elections, PAACA, a renowned Non-Governmental Organization dedicated to enhancing governance in Nigeria, convened a pivotal One-Day Town Hall Meeting in Imo State on July 23rd. The gathering, which brought together a diverse array of stakeholders, including revered religious leaders, esteemed traditional rulers, security agencies, civil society organizations, and the National Orientation Agency, provided a platform for in-depth discussions on electoral reforms.

The Executive Director of PAACA, Ezenwa Nwagwu, elucidated that the Citizens Dialogue was designed to augment public awareness and comprehension of electoral reforms, facilitate inclusive discourse among citizens from varied backgrounds on electoral reform and constitutional amendments, and compile citizen-driven recommendations for submission to the National Assembly and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Nwagwu revealed that Imo State marked the 17th state where PAACA had organized the town hall meeting to popularize the Electoral Act and gather citizens' input. Based on his extensive experience, he noted that a significant challenge in Nigeria's electoral process stems from the public's limited understanding of electoral laws, processes, and tools. He emphasized that many citizens remain unfamiliar with INEC guidelines and the Nigerian Constitution, leading to uninformed discussions about elections.

He expressed optimism that the initiative would enhance public knowledge of electoral innovations and improvements ahead of the 2027 elections and subsequent polls. "When electorates are informed, politicians can no longer manipulate them with misleading talking points," he asserted. He added that PAACA's effort aims to demystify the electoral process, expose relevant laws, and curb electoral manipulations.

Stella-Maris Oparaugo, State Director of the National Orientation Agency in Imo State, echoed Nwagwu's concerns, stressing that many Nigerians are unaware of key electoral reforms. She pledged that her office would intensify efforts to educate citizens about their voting power, emphasizing that the real power lies with the people, not INEC. "The polling unit is where change happens," she stressed.

DSP Henry Okorie, Police Public Relations Officer of Imo State Police Command, representing CP Aboki Danjuma, assured that the police are committed to providing a secure environment for citizens to exercise their franchise. He emphasized the police's dedication to ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for free, fair, and credible elections.

His Royal Majesty Eze Dr. Matthew Chiedozie Nwokeoma, traditional ruler of Umuokanne Ancient Kingdom and Chairman of Security, Peace, and Conflict Resolution Committee in Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, highlighted the crucial role traditional rulers play in effective electoral reform. He noted that, as custodians of their communities, they are well-positioned to manage crises and ensure peaceful elections.

Barr. Ndidi Anike Val-Ukaoma, a legal practitioner and human rights activist, emphasized the need to adhere to the law governing elections. She noted that electorates' discontent stems from disparities and urged INEC and relevant agencies to listen to the people's voices in this democratic setting.

Engr. Ifeanyi Nwagu, Chairman of AIFY Global Group, has appealed to Imo State Governor, His Excellency Hope Uzodinma, to intervene in the alleged  attempt by some government appointees to destroy AIFY Global Aluminium Company located at Plot DW24, New Naze Industrial Layout, Naze, Owerri North LGA.

According to Nwagu, on July 5th, men from the government forcibly demolished the company's fence at its head office along Aba Road, Naze, without prior notice. When Nwagu inquired about the reason, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Innovation and Engineering Services, Ikenna Elezieanya, allegedly stated that he would bring down the factory at all costs.

Nwagu expressed shock at the commissioner's statement, questioning how a government appointee tasked with promoting investment and economic growth could vow to destroy a factory he invested years in building. "How can a government appointee say he will destroy a factory I built in my own state? A rational Imo citizen would think twice about investing here with such treatment. Government appointees should ease the burden on citizens. Imo belongs to all of us, and governance is temporary. Despite daily discouragements, we have chosen to establish here against all odds. I have helped numerous young entrepreneurs and established over six businesses in Imo."

Nwagu referenced the Imo State Industrial Policy launched by Governor Uzodinma in September 2022, aimed at driving industrial growth and development. However, he lamented that instead of supporting this vision, some government appointees are sabotaging the governor's efforts.

Nwagu praised Governor Uzodinma for his commitment to infrastructural development in Imo State and expressed confidence that the governor's good intentions wouldn't include authorizing the destruction of a thriving industry that contributes to the state's economic growth. "It's contradictory for government appointees to undermine the governor's initiatives when the governor himself is working towards the state's progress."

"Governor Hope is doing marvellously well. The governor can come out with the best policies for the state but if the commissioners cannot institutionalize the policies of the governor, there won't be progress. I call on the governor to look into his cabinet and remove the people that are not doing their work. Imolites are not feeling the impact of the commissioners. Government is activity not human beings. These appointees should stop incriminating the governor. The negativity in this government is more than the positivity." 

Reflecting on the company's history, Nwagu noted that AIFY Global was founded in 2008 and has since operated successfully, providing direct employment to over 250 Imo residents.

He recounted how he reached an agreement with the Imo State Government to establish an aluminum industry in 2014. He revealed that the government assigned a plot of land at DW24 Naze Industrial Layout, specifically designated for Aluminum Industries. With a keen interest in setting up an aluminum company, he finalized the agreement and the paper works before constructing a factory on the land. "Today, the factory has achieved significant success, specializing in aluminum extrusion, melting, fabrication, corrugation, and roofing. The company has created employment opportunities for over 250 Imo residents directly and approximately 2000 people indirectly", he stated.

The Orlu-born industrialist appealed to Governor Uzodinma to rein in his appointees and redirect their efforts towards supporting Imo's development. He emphasized that these appointees should encourage investors and industrialists who are contributing to the state's economic growth, rather than discouraging them.

He also pointed out that many of these appointees lack the experience of building a company from the ground up and creating jobs, which is essential for understanding the challenges faced by entrepreneurs and industrialists.

Owerri, Imo State – In a landmark effort to empower rural women as agents of peace and conflict resolution, Alliances for Africa (AfA) recently convened a community awareness campaign for over 130 women from seven villages in Owalla autonomous community, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State. The outreach, held as part of its advocacy on the 3rd National Action Plan (NAP) on United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325, focused on promoting women’s participation in peace and security dialogues.

The participating villages included Obashinashinemena, Umuogwuo, Eshirilam, Dikenarougo, Arugo, Obulonaezuoke, and Umuosuagwu. The event aimed to demystify the provisions of the National Action Plan and train women as stakeholders in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and decision-making processes at the local level.

Background: Women, Peace and Security in Nigeria

The Project Officer with AFA, Ifeoma Obinwa, speaks massively on the Adoption in 2000, while stressing on the historical grounds of UNSCR 1325. She stresses that it acknowledges the disproportionate impact of armed conflict on women and girls and stresses the importance of women’s inclusion in peace negotiations, post-conflict reconstruction, and conflict prevention. Nigeria became a signatory in 2013, launching its first National Action Plan (NAP) to localize the resolution’s five key pillars: Prevention, Protection, Participation, Relief and Recovery, and Prosecution.

Now in its third cycle (2023–2027), the National Action Plan emphasizes integrating women at all levels of peace and security decision-making, especially in communities historically affected by structural gender exclusion.

Despite the global and national policy strides, women remain underrepresented in security dialogues, traditional cabinets, community development planning, and land governance in many rural Nigerian communities.

“According to UN Women, as of 2024, less than 20% of peace negotiation delegations globally have female representation, a reality that trickles down to grassroots governance structures in places like Owalla”.

Voices from the Field: “We are the silent builders”

During interactive sessions, many women shared deep-seated grievances regarding systemic marginalization:

“We sweep the villages, care for families, and support community development. But when it’s time to share land or development levies, we’re ignored. They say we’re strangers,” said Mrs. Osuji Patience, a participant from Umuogwuo.

“They call us when the family is in crisis, to care for the sick or the elderly. But when our fathers’ property is shared, they exclude us. It’s like we don’t exist,” added Ijeoma, another participant.

At the Workshop Juliet Okeiyi, a community mobilizer, introduced the women to the five pillars of the NAP framework. She emphasized that women’s participation in peace and security is not symbolic, it is strategic.

“The goal is for women to be actively involved in preventing violence, mediating conflicts, and occupying the decision-making seats that affect them. This training helps communities understand that peace isn’t sustainable without women,” Okeiyi explained.

She also highlighted that AfA is collaborating with stakeholders to domesticate the National Action Plan at the state level, encouraging the Imo State government to develop a State Action Plan (SAP) that reflects the realities of local women.

Community Leadership Responds

Hon. Rosemary Obilor, President-General of Owalla community and a lone female in the local traditional council, praised the campaign as “eye-opening,” noting that the training revealed many cultural practices that invisibly harm and marginalize women.

“Women are not just caregivers or followers; we are decision-makers and peace agents. The women in this room will return to their villages and carry this message into their August meetings, churches, and homes,” she said.

She decried the absence of women in community land sales, conflict mediation, and development levy sharing, despite their substantial unpaid contributions to social development.

“When lands are sold in the community, quotas go to the Eze, President-General, Youths, Oha Cabinet, and even security units but women are excluded. When we ask why, they say we are strangers. Yet these ‘strangers’ raise the future of the community.”
