...thanks Ovye for two years of  laudable service

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Imo state command welcomed her new commandant, Mary E. Mbanugo on 16th September, 2024 and bade farewell to former Commandant Matthew Sunday Ovye with profound gratitude to him for his two years of applaudable service to the command and the state.

The departmental heads and entire officers of the command heartily welcomed Commandant Mbanugo, the first female NSCDC Commandant in Imo State during the epoch-making handover ceremony officiated by the immediate past Commandant, Matthew Sunday Ovye. 

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Commandant Ovye extolled NSCDC officers of Imo State command for the support given to him throughout his years of service and urged them to extend more of such support to the new commandant in order to help her excel and perform her duties optimally.

He described Commandant Mbanugo as a very gallant officer whose wealth of experience in the corps will immeasurably benefit Imo state and take the command to greater peaks. 

Having served successfully in the intelligence and investigative department of NSCDC Imo state, Ovye expressed confidence in her great capacity and competence in continuing the good works he started in securing the lives and property of Imo people.

Ovye assured Mbanugo that she will have no regret serving in Imo state command because there are quality personnels who are dedicated to duty and committed to the mandate of NSCDC. 

He however, noted that the only challenge of NSCDC in Imo state is logistics and encouraged Imolites to support the government and the corps in providing adequate security to the state, stressing that security is every man's business. 

Commandant Ovye appreciated the governor of Imo State Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma for the support given to him which according to him, translated to his success story in Imo state, adding that Imo people should support his administration for the bettering of the state. 

He further enjoined Imolites to support security of the state by supporting the new commandant and ensuring the state is driven to progressive wheels, adding that his best wishes and prayers are with the new commandant and the state even as he assumes his assignment as the new Delta State NSCDC Commandant.

Commandant Mbanugo appreciated the command for the warm reception given to her and expressed satisfaction at the level of coordination she witnessed on arrival. 

The Ihiala, Anambra State born new Imo Commandant assured Imolites of her commitment to the constitutional mandate of the corps which is to guarantee the safety of the citizens at all cost. 

Her words, "Imolites should expect the best from me. With God by our side we shall ensure the security of lives and property of the state and protect the rights of every citizen of Imo state.

"NSCDC under my watch will work assiduously to see that everything that is illegal and fraudulent is stopped. We will ensure that who ever commits offence shall be booked. Oil bunkering cripples the economy of the nation and must be resisted. Oil bunkers should relocate to another state because they will not succeed in Imo State".

The "Safe School Initiative" of  

the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has continued to yield enormous results, as the Corps meaningfully engage the minds of teens and youths to become responsible members of the society. 

The NSCDC Imo State Commandant, Matthew Sunday Ovye while speaking to Newsmen in Owerri recently, revealed that the Corps is on a mission to "catch them young" in order to guarantee a safe and sustainable society for all, now and in the future. 

He stated that Safe School Initiative is the brainchild of NSCDC Commandant General (CG), Dr. Armed Abubukar Audi, mni, OFR, to sensitize, enlighten and re-orient school pupils and students on the dangers of crime, violence and social vices and as well engage the youths meaningfully to become useful and responsible citizens of the country. 

He noted that the youths' involvement in insecurity, crime, drug use, kidnapping for ransom, recruitment into and membership of dangerous criminal gangs have been on the increase in the last few years, hence the Corps' reason for prioritizing the safe school initiative. 

He revealed that the Corps has a specialized safe school team which  collaborates with its Female Strike Force and the Rapid Response Squad, moving  round schools, sensitizing and educating the young ones on the need to shun all forms of crime and social vices. 

The Safe School Project Team according to him, has spread its tentacles across the whole Imo State, touring every school in the 27 LGAs of the state, adding that the month of June, Safe school team visited schools in Ngor Okpala, Isu , Orlu, Ideato North and South, Nkwerre etc. 

 Ovye emphasized that the Safe School Initiative has continued to yield enormous results, adding that many youths who pervert and distort the harmony, tranquility and conducive learning culture in academic environments have been arrested and dispossessed of their weapons and charms.

He expressed shock at the heinous activities masterminded by little students, saying that it was the proactive intervention of the Corps last month that stopped some students from executing their plans to invite rival groups to fight one another in their schools at the rounding off of WAEC examination.

His words, "NSCDC is on a mission to catch young boys in the primary and secondary schools before they become uncontrollable. We are succeeding in positively capturing the minds of these teenagers so that the air will be safe for everyone to breath in future unlike now that the air has been polluted and there is regular blood spill. 

"It is disturbing that secondary school students and even primary school pupils go to school with weapons and charms to fight and attack one another. This is why our Safe School Team is always on surveillance. Once we get them, we bring them to the Corp, give them orientation and allow our chaplain and counsellors to interact with them and their parents, counsel and pray for them. 

"The Corps is committed to our constitutional mandate of protecting communities against crime and insecurity. We must strive for and contribute our utmost to restoring absolute order, security, peace, prosperity and development in Imo State".

Ovye however, charged parents to be committed to responsible parenting and shun negligence and nonchalant attitudes towards upbringing of their children. 

He enjoined them to speedily report to the Corps once they notice significant negative changes in their children, so that the Corps will use the necessary disciplinary, counselling and therapeutic measures to bring such to a stop. 

He also tasked teachers to ensure they report any case of cultism, abuse, criminality and other vices amongst pupils/students in their schools, to the Corps, stressing that they are professionally trained to find out the truth from them, with the sole aim of proffering lasting solutions to them.

The Commandant urged other security agencies to partner with the "Safe School Initiative" of the Corps to ensure total eradication of crime, unrest and crisis in our schools.

Ovye Urges Parents, and Teachers To Identify With NSCDC To Handle Delinquencies in Children

The Imo State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Matthew Sunday Ovye has charged parents and teachers to report  strange behaviours of their children and pupils to the Corps, assuring them of the Corps' capacity to unravel facts from the lads.

During a press interactive session at the Command over the weekend, Ovye revealed that through the "Safe School Initiative", a remarkable creation of NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Armed Abubukar Audi, mni, OFR, to sensitize and enlighten school pupils and students on the dangers of crime, violence and social vices; the Corps has discovered many incredible occurrences within the school environment and taken significant steps towards combating them. 

He revealed that initiations and  recruitments into cult groups are regrettably evident in primary and secondary schools, adding that investigations have proved that many pupils and students are ignorantly initiated by friends and classmates in a polite and subtle manner.
