Bill Gates Opens Up On Divorce With Ex-Wife, Melinda

Bill Gates has described divorce with his ex-wife Melinda Gates as his most regretful mistake, admitting that it caused misery for both of them for two years.

In a January 2025 Interview with The Times, Gates revealed that the split was his biggest failure, saying, “There are other failures but none that matter.”

However, the two has remained in contact because of their three children, Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe and their shared grandchildren.

Recall that Bill and Melinda Gates first met in 1987 at Microsoft, got married in 1994, and worked together to build their foundation which was launched in 2000.

Gates admitted that he was disappointed by Melinda’s decision to leave the foundation after their divorce, but added, “She saw me through a lot,” reflecting on their years together. He also emphasized the “certain wonderfulness” of sharing an adult life and family with one person.

Melinda Gates has also spoken about the challenges of their separation, noting that the COVID-19 pandemic gave them privacy to manage the split. She described the process as “painful” and “hard” but said it led to new opportunities and an independent lifestyle.

Bill and Melinda Gates still maintain active roles in their family’s lives, focusing on their children and grandchildren.
